Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to get started with Book Tree.
Getting started
What is Book Tree?
Book Tree is a place to discover books, meet authors and share recommendations. We are in beta and welcome feedback as we improve the experience.
Do I need an account to explore books?
No. You can browse books and public author profiles without signing in. Create a free account to save books, follow authors and use your personal dashboard.
Can I be both an author and a reader?
Yes. Use Reader and Author in the header to switch spaces within one account. Your saved books, follows and author membership stay with that account. Choosing Author as a reader activates the free author account.
How do I verify my email or reset my password?
After signing up, follow the verification link sent to your email. Check spam if it is missing, or use Resend verification email on the sign-in page. Use Forgot password to request a reset link. Never send your password to support.
For authors
What does the free author year include?
A public author profile and one book listing for 12 months from your first book publication. You can upload a cover, add a description and link to your purchase pages. The account also lets verified authors follow others and publish endorsements and book recommendations.
What happens when the free year ends?
There is a 30-day visibility grace period after the trial ends. After that, the listing may be hidden from public discovery unless you have continuing author access. Your account and book records are retained. Reader access remains free. There are no automatic charges; contact us about continuation options. Paid checkout and the discounted continuation offer are not yet available in the beta.
How do I add or edit my book?
In Author space, open My Books and choose Add your book. Use Edit book to update an existing listing. A free author account can publish one book; editing that book does not require an additional listing.
Can I add my newsletter, video, podcasts or events?
Your profile supports website, social and newsletter links, including Substack. Accounts with full author access can add an introduction video, supported podcast links and events. Full access can be granted by Book Tree during the beta; paid checkout is disabled.
What image sizes should I use?
Use a square profile photo, ideally 600 × 600 pixels, up to 2 MB; a profile banner around 1600 × 600, up to 3 MB; a square podcast cover around 1400 × 1400, up to 2 MB; and an event image around 1600 × 900, up to 2 MB. Book covers should show the full front cover without cropping. Follow the file guidance on each upload form.
Will my book appear in Google?
Public book and author pages have search metadata, clean URLs and a sitemap to help search engines discover them. Google decides when to crawl and index pages and how to rank them. Book Tree cannot guarantee indexing, rankings or sales.
For readers
What is the difference between Saved books, Favourites and Reading now?
Saved books are titles you want to explore later. Favourite books are books you love. Reading now contains books you are currently reading; you can mark them finished when done. A book can be a favourite and currently being read at the same time.
Are my reading shelves public?
No. Your saved books, favourites, reading status and finished-book shelves are private. Public reader recommendations are a separate feature that requires your agreement and admin approval.
What happens when I follow an author?
Their publicly available books appear in your dashboard. You can also see endorsements and book recommendations that they publish. Following an author does not subscribe you to their email newsletter.
Can I suggest a book that is not listed?
Yes. Choose Suggest a book in your reader dashboard and provide the title and author, plus an optional link and note. You can track its review status. Suggestions do not automatically create public listings or contact authors.
Recommendations and support
How do reader book recommendations work?
Choose Recommend book from a saved book or reading shelf, or open My book recommendations. Write a short note and agree to publish your name with it. It stays private until a Book Tree administrator approves it. Approved recommendations can appear in Explore Books with the book cover.
Can I edit or withdraw a recommendation?
Yes. Readers can edit and resubmit a recommendation; editing returns it to review and removes its previous public approval. Withdraw removes it from public discovery. Author endorsements and recommendations can also be edited or removed from the author dashboard.
Can I buy or read the full book on Book Tree?
Book Tree helps you discover books and links to author websites or retailers. Purchases take place on those external sites. Full-book reading and author-recorded audio chapters are not currently available.
How do I report a problem or give beta feedback?
Use Contact us or email membership@booktree.app. For a recommendation, include the reference number shown beside its report link. Share the page and what happened, but do not include passwords or private credentials.
